The opening
Harrowglass has spent a year learning to speak about Sera Dain in the past tense.
It is a small town and a slow lesson. For months, people in the bakery said “Sera is” and corrected themselves in the same breath, and Noor served them without appearing to hear. By spring the sentences had been mended. By tonight, the first anniversary of the quarry collapse, almost everyone can say her name the way you would say the name of a street that has been renamed.
Almost everyone.
Noor has invited you to supper. The invitation came the way her invitations always have, as a statement of fact and a time, and you have arrived early enough to be useful and late enough to be spared the carving. Rain has followed you up the hill. There is a wreath on the door, still green, and the kitchen behind it smells of bread and of the particular soup Noor makes when she wants no one to talk about the soup.

What presses on you
It is the first anniversary of the quarry collapse. Noor has invited you to a remembrance supper. Sera is twenty-seven. Your first authored choice establishes the prior relationship; it does not decide your feelings about her return.

The woman in the photograph wants soup, dry clothes and a chair. Choose your history with Sera—sibling, childhood friend or spouse—then face the living woman her town has spent a year mourning. Her glass forearm catches an old workmate’s eye. What he says about it changes the table.
